چکیده

In this study, we investigate the shapes of starless and protostellar cores using hydrodynamic, self-gravitating adaptive mesh refinement simulations of turbulent molecular clouds. We simulate observations of these cores in dust emission, including realistic noise and telescope resolution, and compare to the observed core shapes measured in Orion by Nutter & Ward-Thompson (2007). The simulations and the observations have generally high statistical similarity, with particularly good agreement between simulations and Orion B. Although protostellar cores tend to have semi-major axis to semi-minor axis ratios closer to one, the distribution of axis ratios for starless and protostellar cores are not significantly different for either the actual observations of Orion or the simulated observations. Because of the high level of agreement between the non-magnetic hydrodynamic simulations and observation, contrary to a number of previous authors, one cannot infer the presence of magnetic fields from core shape distributions. Intrinsic Shapes of Molecular Cloud Cores

We conduct an analysis of the shapes of molecular cloud cores using recently compiled catalogs of observed axis ratios of individual cores mapped in ammonia or through optical selection. We apply both analytical and statistical techniques to de-project the observed axis ratios in order to determine the true distribution of cloud core shapes. We find that neither pure oblate nor pure prolate cor...

The Intrinsic Shapes of Molecular Cloud Fragments over a Range of Length Scales

We decipher intrinsic three-dimensional shape distributions of molecular clouds, cloud cores, Bok globules, and condensations using recently compiled catalogues of observed axis ratios for these objects mapped in carbon monoxide, ammonia, through optical selection, or in continuum dust emission. We apply statistical techniques to compare assumed intrinsic axis ratio distributions with observed ...

Shapes of Molecular Cloud Cores and the Filamentary Mode of Star Formation

Using recent dust continuum data, we generate the intrinsic ellipticity distribution of dense, starless molecular cloud cores. Under the hypothesis that the cores are all either oblate or prolate randomly-oriented spheroids, we show that a satisfactory fit to observations can be obtained with a gaussian prolate distribution having a mean intrinsic axis ratio of 0.54. Further, we show that corre...
